About Me

A little about me.

I am a Registered Counselling Therapist – Candidate (RCT-C) and Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) based in Sydney, Cape Breton. I earned my Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Counselling from Acadia University in 2022 and offer counselling services to individuals aged 7 and up.

I believe that a strong relationship between the counsellor and client is at the heart of effective counselling. Feeling comfortable, understood, and genuinely heard can make all the difference. My goal is to provide a welcoming, supportive, and non-judgmental space where you can openly explore challenges, recognize your strengths, and work toward meaningful change.

My approach draws from a variety of therapeutic perspectives and techniques, allowing me to tailor counselling to each person's unique needs, experiences, and goals. I support individuals experiencing anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), stress, anger, difficulties with emotional regulation, low self-esteem, life transitions, relationship challenges, and other concerns related to mental health and well-being. I recognize that everyone's experiences are different, and I strive to meet each person where they are.

Outside of counselling, I'm a husband, father, runner, skier, and someone who enjoys spending as much time outdoors as possible. Staying active, connecting with nature, and spending time with family and friends are important parts of my life. I value the role that physical activity, meaningful relationships, and a healthy balance can play in supporting our mental health.

Whether you're facing a difficult time, looking for new ways to cope, or simply hoping to better understand yourself, counselling can be an opportunity for growth and positive change. My hope is that you'll find a space where you feel comfortable being yourself, supported through challenges, and encouraged as you move forward.

Walk & Talk Counselling

Not every meaningful conversation needs four walls.

For some people, traditional face-to-face counselling doesn't feel like the most natural way to connect. This may be especially true for men whose experiences and expectations have shaped how they approach emotional conversations or seeking support.

Walking side by side can ease the pressure of direct eye contact and create space for conversation to unfold more naturally.

Choose from quiet wooded trails, waterfront walks, parks, or another mutually agreed-upon outdoor setting. After an initial counselling session, we'll explore whether this approach is right for you.

Outdoor sessions involve privacy considerations in shared public spaces. We'll discuss confidentiality, accessibility, weather, and clinical suitability together before scheduling.

Helpful information

Frequently asked questions

Starting counselling can bring up questions. Here are answers to a few common ones.

What can I expect during my first counselling session?

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We'll discuss what brought you to counselling, review confidentiality and informed consent, and explore what you hope to gain from our time together. There's no pressure to share everything right away. We'll move at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Initial appointments are 75 minutes.

Is counselling confidential?

Confidentiality is an important part of a safe and trusting counselling relationship. What you share is kept private, subject to legal and professional limits, including certain safety concerns and situations where disclosure is required by law. We'll review confidentiality and its limits during your first appointment.

Do you provide counselling for children and teenagers?

Yes. I offer counselling to children aged 7 and up, adolescents, and adults. Depending on a young person's age, needs, and circumstances, we can discuss appropriate ways to involve parents or caregivers while respecting privacy and the counselling relationship.

How many counselling sessions will I need?

There isn't a set number of sessions that works for everyone. Some people benefit from a few appointments focused on a particular concern, while others prefer ongoing support. We'll check in about your goals and progress and decide together what feels most helpful.

Do you offer virtual counselling?

Yes. I offer virtual counselling as well as in-person appointments. Virtual sessions allow you to connect from a private, comfortable location. In-person appointments are currently available on Sundays at 850 Grand Lake Road, Suite 5, Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Will my insurance cover counselling?

Many extended health benefit plans include counselling coverage, but coverage depends on your individual policy. I hold the designations Registered Counselling Therapist – Candidate (RCT-C) and Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC). Please confirm with your insurer that services provided under these designations are eligible for reimbursement.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?

I understand that life happens and sometimes plans change. If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, I simply ask that you provide as much notice as possible, ideally at least 24 hours. Advance notice is always appreciated, as it allows me to offer that appointment time to someone else.

What payment methods do you accept?

I plan to accept credit card and e-transfer payments, along with direct insurance billing where available. Payment processing and direct billing are being set up, so available options will be confirmed before appointments begin. Insurance coverage and any amount not covered by your plan remain your responsibility.
